Aurora was at first the county seat of Mono County, California. A new survey, in the 1880's showed it was in Nevada. The Inyo County seat was moved to Bridgeport, California. In the 1890, Aurora was the largest city in Nevada.

The only structure that is left in Aurora. It is up the canyon, a ways south of the town site, near the modern-day, open-pit, mining operations.
